Recently I have seen a few who have served on HMS Hermes which did from Oct 62 to July 63, though I did leave under a cloud having celebrating a little more that one should, I enjoyed my short time on Hermes though would not call it a happy ship, Most of my time in the Navy seem to have spent most of it in and out of Admiralty in the AFS or ASWEPS where I enjoyed a trip on the USS Wasp followed by a exercise in Londonderry, Unfortunately I seem to have missed out on knowing many MET men probably because I bought my self out to go into a Pub with Family wrong move, though since then have manage many pubs till retiring through health at the age of 72, some may remember me through my efforts in trying to be a Bodybuilder though now almost 81 that ambition has now gone with the help of Gin, I still try to keep in touch with the Navy as Vice President of my local RNA. |

Charlie - I'm on a roll. Assuming we can't raise enough money from the shrapnel in our pockets to buy the Hermes off the Indians how about this:- We approach the Mafia for a business loan and put our bid in. If we're successful we'll move the Hermes to Portsmouth harbour and open it as a hotel for Indian tourists, and curry restaurant. As I recall you and young Squib were in to this kind of thing so lets have your suggestions. |

Charlie I take great comfort from the fact that you remember me, it does at least prove your medication is working. Love to Gill. My word how time flies. Those years at Northwood were some of the happiest in my life, second only to my eighteen months on Hermes before I arrived there. Speaking of Hermes I recently saw on the internet BBC news that the Indians had put the former Hermes up for sale at an auction but there were no bids. How about we all scoop out the shrapnel in our pockets put it together and make an offer? If we were successful then we'd then need to find somewhere to park it. Maybe in Scotland just to annoy Nicola Sturgeon or failing that - Ruislip Lido. |

Blimey Charlie, looking at the Guest Book since it has been 'reversed' back to normal it seems to have been infiltrated by all manner of visitors. If you get one from 'Miss Whiplash', don't delete it - share it. Just to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas, though I doubt many will remember me because rather like treading in something unpleasant - I didn't stay long enough to leave a mark. I doubt I will attend any future 'get together's' as I have only attended one, and that was in Nottingham in 2012, the day before we flew to China, so I could only stay for the evening meal. At the bar I got chatting to Lt Cdr Peter Rogers, an absolute gent, who, despite my having worked closely with him in Oceanography at Northwood for about three years didn't remember me ............ not a thing. So I then found myself chatting to Dave Pegg who I worked with for about fifteen months on Hermes, and who taught me what can legitimately be drawn from stores as a consumable item, which stood me in good stead when I later joined Bulwark as the senior Leading Hand. Again, no recollection of my existence .......... not a thing. Anyhow Happy Christmas to you all. For those that remember me clearly your medication is working, and for those who very seldom visit this forum ............. Happy Easter! |

Many will echo John Whitehead's words regarding Dave Pegg. Unfortunately many of his friends and ex colleagues will ot be at the funeral because of the distance involved but me and many others will rely on JOHN TO EXPRESS all our feelings at this very sad time and represent the vast numbers who will regret his passing. |

Hi all, David's funeral will 14th December at Bergerac crem at 1445 and afterwards at Chateau Merles.....Like Ken A I remember David when in the mob as a really nice guy, but did not get to really know him until we moved here. For all he acheived in life, including setting up and running his construction company he was, at heart, a Met man! We spent many hours talking about those years. Me as a 8 year NA, 2 yr killick and one year Po and him seemingly always a senior rate! He outfit for his final journey will be his Chiefs uniform (red badges) it was hanging in his wardrobe for years waiting for this occasion, he was my friend and will miss him.... |
